talk about bloody frustrating...Impreza 2.5RS ignition issues.

so i've had spark issues on and off for about a month or so...before that, it had been a cut wire to the MAF sensor. over the past week the car's been sputtering and dying repeatedly...usually while in gear on the highway. D:<

aside from the plugs and wires, what am i missing? could the ignition be going up? correct me if i'm wrong, but a 99 2.5RS doesn't have a distributor cap and rotor, right?

i feel like such a dunce...i just see that CEL and get retarded about what else could be wrong.

well....if you got some free time i'd do some digging to make sure nothing is shorting/grounding out any of the wires that go to your coil packs because if i remember right just one cylinder not working properly can screw the whole thing up.....but yeah i know thats not gonna be fun.....I only say this because when I owned my eclipse one of the wires wasn't spliced right and the coil pack wasnt working right because of that....so its worth checking out....oh and if its posting a CEL go to autozone borrow their code reader and get a code from it and then call your local subie dealership and find out what that code means from their mechanic and THEN you'll know where to start without a doubt.....
*nods* already planned on pulling the code...i'm just hoping against hope that it's something easy. i don't know a thing about wiring, and quite frankly it scares the crap out of me.
well its not that hard believe it or not....you basically want to make sure that none of the wires have been compromised (as in cut or had their sleeves taken off) because bare wiring is BAD.....you also wanna look for maybe burnt sleeves anything that doesnt look normal could be a big hint if you dont get anything from your CEL.....see my associates in Electrical Engineering from Purdue is starting to pay off ;) lol but yeah if there's no damaged wiring my next step would be to check the coil packs themselves and thats not nearly as hard ya see ya just put a screwdriver where the sparkplug should be and have someone turn the engine over to see if it sparks if it does then the pack should be ok......now your worst nightmare would be that the ECU is failing but i think you would get more symptoms then just a sputtering engine...(thats just my .02 though) anyways if ya got anymore questions let me know :)
thanks much! hopefully i'll get this figured out by Saturday...tomorrow's a bust thanks to the rain we're supposed to get(plus the moving i'm trying to do this weekend). argh...worst possible weekend EVAR.
moving aye???? where ya moving too??? and trust me the rain cant be as bad as what im getting here right now....Freezing rain with a chance for +1 Foot of snow :/
out of my apartment into another location nearby. nothing majorly earthshattering. :)
im dreading yet excided to move out of my place this upcoming march....dreading because i have heavy old handme down furniture (like a 300+ lbs couch) but excided cause im gettin my own place no more apartments :)
ahh...you're about a step ahead of me. i was *hoping* to buy, but my situation is dire and there are no houses worth my interest in my price range at this time.

living in Baltimore FTL...stuff's expensive out here.
yeah well im stuck in NW indiana bout an hour or so from chicago....so to sum it up its cold, windy, and dry in the winters and in the summer its normally hot and extremely humid.....so yeah its gonna get down in the low 30's today and its rumored to be hitting the 20's by tonight...im just thankfull i have an attached garage at home ;) lol
enjoy your lower cost of living. in Baltimore, for a small SF detached house(think 2-3 bedrooms, 1 bath rancher style with MAYBE a finished basement) on a small spot of land in a good neighborhood, you're looking to spend over $250k. in my parents' neighborhood, townhouses go for about $500k.
damn a small house like that would sell for bout 100-150k around here....and its not that the area i live in is bad or anything its just that there's almost nothing out here cept for farm land and the indiana dunes.....
yeah, like i said...enjoy low cost of living. i miss the days when small SF homes would go for around that much.

oh yeah and if your still having trouble try posting the Code (once you get it) and the symptoms on clubwrx.net.....they've been nothing but helpfull over there for me and my wrx is the first turbo'ed car and scooby that i've ever owned :D so anyways just let me know if you got anymore questions cause i know how much it sux to have a dieing car :(
they'd be nice over there to someone lacking a snail?
whats that mean????
snail = turbo. they didn't seem too nice to other n/a owners.
as long as you dont go over there preaching A.) how your car is better then everyone elses and B.) how the evo is such a better car then the subby....i think you'll be ok because i rarely see anyone get flamed in any of the forums.....i mean do a search on my accounts entries and you'll see alot of noob questions and alot of honest good answers and btw its Peteys02bugeye if your curious ;)
eh. i'm leary when i do a few quick searches and see flaming, regardless.

that said, i don't know how many of those folks would know the GC RS...since it's a generation earlier than your bugeye.
oh and if you want to impress some people find yourself a cobb AP or other ems along with a nice exhaust...ya know what as long as your car isnt riced out i think you'll be just fine ;)
my car is already decently modified(well, as much as is reasonable so it would still pass MD inspection).

full STi V5 suspension, strut bars front and rear, sways front and rear, Remus exhaust(because oldschool is better), some wacky looking intake that came on the car, stainless header, turboxs DTEC with GBA interface(don't know why it's there, aside from the previous owner wanting to do a promotional thingo with the company), aftermarket wheels, and some cosmetic GC STi goodies.

eventually i'd like to get a better clutch(but not till mine's fried), a lighter flywheel(when i do the clutch), and eventually the full 22B widebody kit and an STi motor/tranny swap...but that's wishful thinking at this point.
well one thing i know with my engine is if you have the wrong intake on the car with no ems to compensate for it...it can start messing up your air fuel ratio and its a long shot but that may be your problem....wouldnt happen to have the stock airbox and pipes???
the car ran fine for a year and a half with the DTEC, and it's got a stock fuel map...
sounds nice.... have any good pics to see???? i've seen the one in your userinfo but its kinda small :(

Definitely pull the code. You can look it up online if Autozone doesn't know it. Plus, lots of people own their own code readers and you might know somebody locally.

I'm not sure if the '99 RS has a distributor in the classical sense, but I'm guessing no. Subaru went through a transition from (1) single coil + mechanical dizzy + plug wires, to (2) electronic ignition + coil(s) all in one location + plug wires to (3) electronic ignition + coil packs directly on plugs. Good luck!
fortunately, my roommate's got a code reader...i'm just hoping he's home sometime in the next two days so i can borrow it.
